Our Kanji Name Calligraphy Experience begins with a gentle introduction to the origins of kanji and the many layers of meaning hidden within each character. If you book at least one day in advance, we will prepare a short video that explains the meaning and history of your name in kanji and show it on our in-store screen when you arrive. Have a specific character you’d like to use? Just let us know when you book—or tell our staff on the day—and we’ll create your perfect kanji name.

Next, we present several kanji options that match your name’s sound, etymology, stroke-count balance, and traditional fortune values. After explaining the meanings and auspicious qualities of each choice, you pick the combination you like best. Guided by our calligrapher, you then brush the characters onto premium washi paper, creating a one-of-a-kind work of art.

Your finished piece can be mounted as a mini scroll, framed fan, or other display style of your choice—and it’s yours to take home immediately. Turn your visit to Roppongi, Tokyo, into a lasting memory with a personalized kanji artwork that’s uniquely yours.

How do you choose the kanji for my name?

We start with the 2,136 Jōyō kanji—Japan’s standard set for literacy—and the 863 Jinmeiyō kanji, which are additional characters legally approved for personal names. Together, these 2,999 characters define what can be officially registered in Japan. From this pool we pick kanji whose sound, meaning, and stroke count harmonize with your name and personality. If you’re commissioning an art piece rather than an official name, we can step beyond these lists and suggest any character you love.

Is there an extra fee for the explanation video?

No. The video is complimentary for guests who take our calligraphy experience or purchase a custom kanji hanko stamp. Reserve at least one day in advance and we’ll play your personalized video on the in-store screen during your visit.

I only speak English. Is that okay?

Absolutely! Our staff can assist you in English throughout the experience.

Can I purchase a kanji hanko stamp?

Yes—prices start from ¥3,300.
