This activity was incredibly special. Our hosts spent hours supporting my eight-year-old in achieving his dream of learning to use a calligraphy brush and learning a little bit about the different writing systems in Japanese. We left with two entire folios of our work and enough knowledge to purchase brushes and ink so that he could continue practicing at home. Additionally, our hosts were consistently kind, thoughtful, and knowledgeable. We were particularly impressed with their gentle approach as we learned. This was absolutely worth the investment.

The calligraphy course brought us closer to the Japanese language, because by writing the characters ourselves we realised how difficult Japanese really is. The workshop leader was very friendly and helpful. She explained each step of the process and demonstrated the strokes, which helped us a lot. We learned to write many different characters and could put them on postcards, a key-ring, a fan and even a hanging scroll. We also received wonderful gifts like a personalised tote bag, our own stamp and other small extras. All of this made the calligraphy course an unforgettable experience. We would gladly recommend it.

This activity was a very cool experience. We were the only ones who signed up for our timeslot, so we received a lot of personalized attention. The calligraphy is a lot harder than it looks! But we had plenty of time and paper to practice on. We made postcards, keychains, bags and scrolls using both books containing select symbols and how to write them as well as in-person guidance. We left with so many cool gifts that we can take home and display as a reminder of our time in Tokyo.

Our party of seven spent a delightful afternoon at the Shodo Cafe! The guys were leery at first, but had a great time—one of them was an absolute natural. The room was organized; the music was fun; and the snacks and drinks were easy / did not impede the calligraphy. The team was extremely patient, literally working hand-on with each of us, constantly replenishing the ink pots and paper. They researched our names in advance, presenting us with individualized meanings and kanji. In addition to your name, a lot of other options were provided to choose from, ensuring that everyone went home with at least one piece to be proud of. We have already hung up our scrolls, and I am looking forward to using my stamp. It was a memorable experience, unlike anything you have probably done before or will have an opportunity to do again. I highly recommend!

Great experience! We got to practice calligraphy while we waited for our stamps to be made. We left with a personalized stamp, ink pad, key chain, postcard and a little paper weight. Highly recommend! The café was a bit hard to find but worth it.
